SAGEPORT – Satellite Monitoring for Port Expansion (Montreal/Contrecoeur)
Updated: Oct 15

The smart port project with the Port of Montreal focused on monitoring the environment around the construction zone of the future harbor at Contrecœur. It was a Canadian Space Agency–funded project for supporting space-based solutions for environmental monitoring around port development in the Saint Lawrence area.
The project’s objective was to develop Earth observation solutions to monitor water turbidity, surface sediment, particulate matter, sediment plumes, shoreline change, shallow water bathymetry, and river ice. These products were designed to help better understand natural erosion processes and anthropogenic pressure related to industrial port activity, including dredging.
Using high and very high spatial resolution satellite-derived products, the project addressed the Port of Montreal’s need for environmental monitoring around the construction zone. It also demonstrated a service that could support ports undergoing development or expansion, including along the Saint Lawrence and in Arctic contexts.
The project included services such as water quality monitoring, bathymetry, erosion-process monitoring, and ice monitoring. It showed how satellite-based monitoring can support port construction, environmental assessment, and future commercial applications for harbor expansion.
