Projects
ARCTUS is involved in a number of projects that make intensive use of in-situ data and remote sensing imagery from various sensors. Below are some of our recent projects.

Niskamoon: Satellite-Derived Bathymetry and Community-Led Mapping in James Bay
The Niskamoon project is a satellite-derived bathymetry project focused on mapping shallow water bathymetry in James Bay. The project uses data collected in the region to produce bathymetric maps of shallow waters, with the overall goal of extending mapping across the entire James Bay shoreline using satellite bathymetry. The work is based on satellite-derived bathymetry techniques, using data collected by the Cree community in James Bay during the summer of 2025. This in sit

NuCoast – Arctic Coastal Erosion Monitoring & Modeling Support
The Nunavik mapping project (Atlas) is a project to map the backshore of the coast, with a focus on identifying sensitive habitats and valuable coastal areas. The work involves mapping land use and land cover across the entire Nunavik coast in northern Quebec, producing datasets that highlight areas that need protection, particularly in the case of a maritime incident such as an oil spill. The mapping was carried out using satellite data and artificial intelligence models to

SAGEPORT – Satellite Monitoring for Port Expansion (Montreal/Contrecoeur)
The smart port project with the Port of Montreal focused on monitoring the environment around the construction zone of the future harbor at Contrecœur. It was a Canadian Space Agency–funded project for supporting space-based solutions for environmental monitoring around port development in the Saint Lawrence area. The project’s objective was to develop Earth observation solutions to monitor water turbidity, surface sediment, particulate matter, sediment plumes, shoreline chan

Eeyousat Satellite Earth Observation Monitoring System for Biodiversity Action (SAMBA)
The SAMBA / EeyouSAT project was a Canadian Space Agency–funded initiative under the SmartEarth program. Its purpose was to develop satellite-based tools for monitoring coastal and ecosystem change in the James Bay region of Eeyou Istchee, with a strong emphasis on supporting ecosystem restoration, Indigenous-led conservation, and long-term environmental management. The main deliverables were geospatial products and monitoring services. These included bathymetry mapping, shor
