Projects
ARCTUS is involved in a number of projects that make intensive use of in-situ data and remote sensing imagery from various sensors. Below are some of our recent projects.

The mystery behind an island that appeared, then disappeared (2026)
This image shows what we believe to be a floating island drifting on a south-to-north trajectory across Williston Lake. It was taken in the summer of 2026. Williston Lake is an artificial lake that was created in 1968 on the Peace River, in its section located in British Columbia. It is the result of a constriction of this river during the construction of W.A.C. Bennett hydroelectric dam, its area is about 1721 km2. In 2012, when the reservoir was heavily filled, floating tr

SAGEPORT – Satellite Monitoring for Port Expansion (Montreal/Contrecoeur)
The smart port project with the Port of Montreal focused on monitoring the environment around the construction zone of the future harbor at Contrecœur. It was a Canadian Space Agency–funded project for supporting space-based solutions for environmental monitoring around port development in the Saint Lawrence area. The project’s objective was to develop Earth observation solutions to monitor water turbidity, surface sediment, particulate matter, sediment plumes, shoreline chan

Earth observation solutions for environmental monitoring of industrial port zones (2020 – 2022)
Human activities and the maritime industry can have a considerable impact on ecosystems by modifying coastal dynamics and weakening natural habitats of great ecological value. Many actors in the industry voluntarily adhere to environmental certification programs to improve their environmental performance. While in-situ monitoring methods have limitations in terms of spatial coverage, advancements in satellite remote sensing, artificial intelligence, and big data processing off
