The Niskamoon project is a satellite-derived bathymetry project focused on mapping shallow water bathymetry in James Bay. The project uses data collected in the region to produce bathymetric maps of shallow waters, with the overall goal of extending mapping across the entire James Bay shoreline using satellite bathymetry.

The work is based on satellite-derived bathymetry techniques, using data collected by the Cree community in James Bay during the summer of 2025. This in situ data is used to support the development of satellite bathymetry models, helping to improve and train the mapping approach. The project is part of a broader system where satellite-derived bathymetry is sometimes integrated into other projects, but in this case it is delivered as a more direct, standalone service.

The project is funded through a collaboration involving the Canadian Hydrographic Service, which supported the Cree community in acquiring equipment and training to collect reliable bathymetric data in situ. This capacity-building component enables the community to gather data that can then be used for mapping and modelling purposes.

The mapped information is used through web-based platforms, where the data is made publicly available for visualization. It can also be accessed through tools such as CartaVista, allowing users, including those in Arctic communities, to view navigation-relevant information on areas where navigation may be difficult.

The reason this region needs to be mapped is to support navigation, safety, and environmental understanding in James Bay. The bathymetric data helps identify underwater features and conditions that are important for navigation, as well as supporting scientific use such as studies of submerged vegetation and ecosystems.
