Ice Watch & Ice Mapping
At Arctus, we offer advanced near–real-time ice mapping services to support safer, smarter decision-making in riverine and coastal environments.
Using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) from Sentinel-1 and the RADARSAT Constellation Mission, we monitor ice day or night, in all weather conditions tracking ice formation, evolution, breakup, ice jams, and open-water channels. When conditions allow, we complement this with high-resolution optical imagery from Sentinel-2 and Landsat for enhanced visualization and communication.
River Ice Mapping

Monitor river ice conditions accurately using radar and optical satellite imagery.
Arctus offers an advanced near-real-time river ice mapping service, primarily based on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data from Sentinel-1 satellites (Copernicus program) and the Radarsat Constellation Mission (RCM). This service is designed to meet ice monitoring and management needs.
Reliable Coverage, Whatever the Conditions
SAR imagery captures ice conditions day and night, and in all weather conditions, ensuring constant monitoring of:
ice formation, evolution, and melting,
ice jams and other risks related to river dynamics,
open water channels during thawing phases.
In addition, when atmospheric conditions are favorable (clear skies), complementary maps from Sentinel-2 optical satellites are also produced. These images provide a detailed visualization of ice extent, snow cover, and transition zones.
Deliverables
Updated ice cover maps (raster or vector format) delivered several times a week;
Time series allowing you to track ice changes over the days or seasons;
Easy integration into your management systems or mapping platforms (GeoTIFF, shapefile, web service).
